While wandering through the depths of my Data folder, I came across a certain "Discworld tourney.doc". So, being curious, I opened it, and found that it was my log from the Omnian Trivia Inquisition, from 2004!

So, the question that must be asked is: will the tournament resume?

I realise that this mysterious thing known as "life" has been happening to milestogo13, and one of the side-effects of "life" is to have less time to spend on things like this, but it'd be nice to start the quiz up again at some point.

yea Vimes!
You scored as Commander Samuel Vimes. You are Samuel Vimes! Captain of Ankh-Morporks city Watch! You are a knight, married to the very wealthy, noble lady Sybil Ramkin. You often walk the streets at night, and are able to tell where you are by the feel of the cobbles under your boots. You always do what is right that is, what needs to be done to keep the city safe, even when it seems bad.

Official Quiz News Post! *gasp*
Hello everyone,

I'm sorry it's been so long, but after the move out of New York, life began happening to me at an alarming rate, and I have had absolutely no time to maintain the quiz. I do apologize for that, because a good time was being had by all. I'll also admit that the whole monstrous uproar caused over at the original community that spawned the creation of this separate community in the first place took some wind out of my sails as well.

But those days are behind us now, and my life is beginning to take some sort of cohesive shape again. So I have a few pieces of news.

- The primary thing that has kept me so busy is that I've been working on my next novel, but it's now finished, edited, and out the door to the pubishing houses looking for a good home, so I have free time on my hands once more. I'll probably know in the next month, month and a half when a potential release date could be.

- I will be attempting to bring the Discworld quiz back, in this location of course, in the next couple of weeks. I will need help in the form of question gurus, so if that's still your bag, let me know and we'll try to get the system worked out.

I appreciate everyone's patience, and look forward to seeing you around once more someday very soon.

All the best,

New Discworld RPG.
Er...I read in the rules and it didn't say anything against this, so I'm gonna go ahead and just mention something really quickly. Feel free to delete it if you deem it to be spam.

I'm here on behalf of disco_tech, who is starting a Discworld RPG called discoworld, which has to do with Discworld night life. She is currently looking for players. The list of available players is here. It also has instructions for how to apply and all that.

Please give the link a look and see if you're interested. Or feel free to spread the word to others who might be interested. If you have any questions, e-mail discoworld [at] gmail.com. Or you can ask me and I'll ask her, but that might take longer.

Right now I need something to distract myself from NaNo and the impending exam in an hour and a half, so I bring questions! There has been no Discworld quiz here for months and I miss it, so I present a little filler full of quotes to make sure you haven't all forgotten everything...

Questions this way!Collapse )

I will give you the answers either on Wednesday or when I am bored of waiting :)

ETA Woe, I am stupid and didn't change the size of the boxes. If you can't fit an answer in to a poll box, put it in the comments since they're all screened.

Blergh. Sorry it's been so long everybody. So here's what's going on...

- I'm currently in the middle of a major move. I'm going on a writer's retreat soon to finish the novel I'm working on and organizing all of that is taking up a lot of my time.

- I'm working on the novel itself as well, which eats up even more time, as I try and write at least 2,000 moderately polished words a day, minimum.

- I'm going through a minor medical emergency of my own, and a fairly moderate to major one in my family which I have to keep close tabs on.

All of that combined has conspired to take up all my time. Once I'm moved (as of July 10th) and settled in, which shouldn't take more than a few days, I do plan on getting everything moving again here. But there are only so many hours in a day, and while the tournament is a lot of fun, I'm afraid I have to prioritize the things I've listed above ahead of it.

Feel free to discuss things among yourselves or ask questions, as I am still around and updating my own journal/checking to see how everyone else is doing. I just don't have the solid hour it takes to sit down and get a round ready, or the hour and a half to two hours it takes to grade, organize, and tally up the results of that round afterward.

The tournament will resume and I still have all the standings sheets. Thank you for your patience, I'm sorry for the delays, but such is life.

Erm. I'm curious to know what's going on with the quiz tournament in this community. ...Unless it's still going on and I've missed something vital.
Does anyone have any info? milestogo13, perhaps?

Interesting Disc-ussion question...
Is anyone familiar with Propp? I've managed to apply his theory on major roles within a narrative to almost every book I own, but with Discworld I find it starts to get a bit tricky. I think a large amount of the problem stems from the fact that Propp is so linear and the Discworld is much more complex, but I'd like to see what people think.

The Basics: Vladimir Propp was a Russian structuralist who deconstruced fairy tales and folk stories to come up with eight major character types and their roles, along with 31 general functions that exists within the majority of narratives. The eight characters are the Hero, the Villain, the Donor, the Dispatcher, the Helper, the False Hero, the Princess and the King.

  • The Hero is the main character, the protagonist, the guy (or girl) that sets off on a questy sort of thing, normally.
  • The Villain opposes the Hero, and does generally villainous sort of deeds.
  • The Helper helps the Hero (vague, sorry, cannot find a better definition).
  • The Donor prepares the Hero or provides the hero with some sort of magical artefact they need for their quest.
  • The Dispatcher sets the Hero on their questy sort of thing.
  • The False Hero claims/appears to be the Hero, whether it's in the eyes of the audience or the in the eyes of the other characters within the narrative.
  • The Princess is the Hero's reward or sometimes the goal- out of all of the characters, I think it's the Princess who is most likely to take the role of something inanimate or intagible, although it is still usually a person.
  • The King is sort of in charge and has a certain level of authority, and rewards the hero.

So. Given a specific mini-series or stand-alone book or whatever, how would you best equate these characters to the Discworld?

Overall Standings Through Round 4Collapse )

All rounds from this point forward will be community locked, which means you have to be a member of the community and logged in to even see the post the quiz is located in. This is due to a strange glitch in the Live Journal poll system, where the number of answers each solution to a multiple choice question has received, no matter what you set your "Results Viewable To" security level at, are visible to anyone not logged in.

This was by far the hardest round you all have faced thus far, but we did warn you it would get progressively more difficult *grin* This is going to go a long way to stratifying the standings. So here we are, the answers and your results.

Many apologies for the delays recently, real life keeps happening to me. Muchas family stuff to deal with. I promise we're gonna see this thing through though, if you'll just bear with me. Many apologies again, but the good news is that the answer key and round 4 standings/results go up tomorrow for certain.

Of course, that was back in Ur...
What do you know? Ur actually exists. I can't remember if I already knew this.

I love the Roundworld references Pratchett keeps throwing in. (Klatchian coffee, anyone?) I'm hopeless at spotting them, but once they're explained to me (Offler bless the APF!) I can't believe anyone could be so well-researched.

Then I catch myself doing the same in my scribblings, and of course it's easy and obvious when you're doing it yourself.

So, what real-world references in Discworld - obscure as you like - really tickled you?

The tournament will likely resume tomorrow. I apologize for the delay, I juggle three careers in real life (stand-up comedian, author, magazine editor) and this tends to keep me rather...well...busy is a kind word for it.

Question gurus, also, if you wouldn't mind beginning to e-mail questions to me at the address on my personal journal's user info page, I'd really appreciate it.

In the meantime, a Disc-ussion question. People have been asking for awhile now what Discworld book you'd like to see made into a movie, and what stars you'd like to see cast as what characters, but I'm going to make the question a little less limiting. You don't have to pick one book and stick there, I'd just like to know if there are any characters from anywhere in the Discworld universe that, when you read them or later on when you looked at a celebrity, you just immediately said "That's him/her!" So yeah, if you've ever thought that a celebrity would be perfect as a certain character, feel free to share. If your celeb is a little obscure, feel free to provide some examples of what they've done as well.

I'm not sure when I'll be on again, my internet is being stupid at the moment. I'll try to get on other places so I can keep up in the community and keep up with the quiz. Hope to be back on again soon
